Elder abuse refers to intentional or neglectful act done by a caregiver or trusted person that leads to and may lead to harm or vulnerability to the elder. An elder abuse may be in a form of, physical, emotional, psychological or even sexual. The most common form of an elder abuse is neglect. It is one of the biggest problems in the senior living society. Abusers usually target the senior population because they are more vulnerable.

A big part of my job as a geriatric care manager is helping elderly people make transitions. One transition that is very hard for many elderly people is no longer being able to drive themselves places. More than any other activity, driving is directly linked to a senior citizen’s independence. It takes one back to the days of youth and freedom. But driving privileges must be discussed if your elder is driving erratically or showing bad judgment that can put their life in danger or the lives of others. Having driving difficulties usually come from the natural physical deterioration we all experience as we age. This can include poor vision, reduced hearing, slowed reflexes and many other things that negatively impact our driving ability.

While many nursing homes or assisted living centers provide excellent care and treatment, it is a well known and sad fact that some residents of nursing homes or assisted living centers are the victims of elder abuse and neglect at the hands of undertrained and uncaring staff members and employees.

Jim Bailey just buried his wife Betty of 55 years. Her illness drained their lifetime savings and the stress of the loss of his beloved wife and caring for her long illness has taken its toll on Jim.
Jim just wasn’t himself anymore. He rarely ventured out of his house and stopped going to his weekly card game with the guys. Jim’s hygiene and eating habits were rapidly declining and he stopped taking care of the housekeeping.
