It can be difficult when an older loved one starts showing signs of deteriorating; however there are a few things you can do if you’re dedicated to supporting independence.
For example, you can have a look around their house and think about the appliances and aids you could provide them with to make day-to-day activities easier. Things we take for granted, such as using the bathroom or getting in and out of the shower can be difficult for your elderly loved one, so it’s important you provide them with the tools to do so with dignity.
Another idea is to provide them with small, folding tables that they can eat their food on. These allow them to sit in their favourite chair during breakfast, lunch and dinner, without having to grapple with complicated or fiddly lap trays.
Technology is another great way to help your loved one remain independent. By teaching them a few basics about how to use a computer, you can show them how to find support groups online, play old-time games they thought had long gone out of fashion (such as chequers and chess) or even connect with their children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces on social networking sites.
Furthermore, if you connect with them via Skype, they can rest assured they can see you face-to-face (virtually) every day. This is ideal if you live more than 10 or 15 minutes away, or don’t have enough time to visit them every day.
However if you’ve taken all of this advice and your loved one is still struggling, you could also consider home care services. Qualified carers can visit your loved ones’ house and help them with daily activities.
By being cared for within their own surroundings, elderly people can still feel dignified and independent, without the threat of feeling institutionalised – which many do when asked or forced to move into a residential care home or sheltered housing.
